Date: Thu, 1 Apr 1999 11:56:06 -0500 From: "Whitford, Emil (NBC)" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "'[EMAIL PROTECTED]'" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Chief Vernon Sly Fox Pocknett , March 24, 1934 - March 31, 1999. The CREATOR has called home another Wampanoag Warrior. Yesterday at about 2:00 PM Chief Vernon Sly Fox Pocknett, Mashpee Wampanoag, crossed over from this life into the next. Chief Pocknett was well known, loved, and respected by his people and others all across Turtle Island. Unfortunately, my own relationship with Chief Pocknett was limited to only a few talks, at the 1998 LISN Conference and at other times at 55 Acres in Mashpee, MA. But he was known to me, through others, as a man with a lot of strength and knowledge. A man who had a great love for his people and was dedicated to their continued growth and well-being. Chief Pocknett will be greatly missed, but even as the Wampanoag and others feel their sorrow and mourn for their loss they must also know that today Chief Pocknett once again runs with other warriors, and he does so with two good legs and a strong heart. Today Chief Pocknett speaks to the Creator about his people and he does so in the language of the Wampanoag. Today when the Wampanoag call on their ancestors to guide them and give them strength, the number of ancestors who will provide them with this strength and guidance has increased by one. To Chief Pocknett, go in peace, knowing that until the end of forever you will be loved and respected by your people, go knowing that you did make a difference in the lives of many. To the Wampanoag Nation, I give you my condolences, my respect, and my love.
