Judge Rules Occaneechi A Tribe - (ASHEBORO) -- There's pressure on the
North Carolina Commission on Indian Affairs today to give official status
to a new Indian tribe. Earlier this week, a judge ruled that the Occaneechi
Band of the Saponi Nation qualifies as a tribe... making members eligible
for various state services. Those range from housing, food and clothing aid
to job training and tutoring. Commission members are meeting today in
Asheboro... and the Greensboro News and Record says the issue is on the
table.
