PULP COMPANY OFFER MAY END NATIVE LOGGING DISPUTE
CBC News WebPosted Thu Jan 14 16:42:34 1999

HALIFAX - Nova Scotia's minister of natural resources says big pulp
companies are willing to hire native loggers to work on Crown land. Kennie
MacAskill says it is an ideal solution to the dispute with natives over
logging. But MacAskill says a final deal hasn't been reached.

Mi'kmaq chiefs have threatened to go after an injunction to stop pulp
companies from harvesting trees on government land. The chiefs say they
have not given up their treaties and that gives them the right to cut where
and when they want.
