PRINCE GEORGE -- An overwhelming majority of people who voted in a
private plebiscite on the Nisga'a treaty opposed the deal. Just under 97
per cent of 7,252 people who voted said they don't want their MLAs to
support the treaty "as it now stands." Only 2.5 per cent said their MLAs
should support the deal.

The plebiscite, organized by the group B.C. in Focus, took place
Saturday. About 10 per cent of those eligible voted.

The group says it will present the results to the lieutenant-governor
and the three area MLAs -- New Democrats Paul Ramsey and Lois Boone and
Liberal Paul Nettleton.

Ramsey dismissed the results, and Nisga'a Chief Joe Gosnell said the
vote won't change anything. But Liberal leader Gordon Campbell renewed his
call for a B.C.-wide plebiscite.
