ZAPATISTA ARMY OF NATIONAL LIBERATION

January 17, 1999.

To the national and international press:

Ladies and gentlemen:

The communique concerning the Consultation went out to Mexicans in other
countries and also calling for an international demonstration for the
excluded of the world.

Pope John Paul II is coming now, and they are using up the makeup and
cosmetics at the Department of Government and Los Pinos. The face they
should be hiding is that of the war in Chiapas, a war which also claims
victims in the Catholic Church. Zedillo and Labastida have problems: How
to hide from the Pope the fact that the 45 indigenous they ordered
assassinated were praying for peace when they were executed? How to hide
the churches that the "Peace and Justice" paramilitaries keep closed? How
to cover up the churches transformed into barracks by the Federal Army?
What cosmetic can hide the harassment campaign that they followed against
Bishop Samuel Ruiz Garcia, so that he would resign from the CONAI and leave
the Catholic Church outside the mediation work? What mask can silence the
statements by the Federal Army General who, with a tzeltal translation of
the "Gospel According to Saint Mark [Marcos]" in his hand, "demonstrated"
the Catholic Church's ties to the "transgressors of the law" (or, rather,
us, the zapatistas)?

And the teachers imprisoned for demanding their rights? And the
militarization in Oaxaca, Guerrero, Chiapas, Veracruz, Jalisco and the
Huasteca? And the international observers expelled from the country? And
the popular discontent over the economic policies? And the bankrupt
businesses?

They snap their fingers and find nothing that can block these truths.

They make crosses and beg: "Please let him not make political statements!"

Vale. Salud, and: is it not in the Gospel where it says "The truth will
set you free"?

>From the mountains of the Mexican Southeast.

P.S. HESITATING IN FRONT OF THE MENU. - Between the Sinaloa chilorio and
the mole poblano: which is the appetizer and which is the main course?
