WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. - Beneath blue skies and in windy cold,
10,000
Navajo packed the Dean Jackson Sports Arena, hoping
newly-elected
President Kelsey Begaye would restore honor, credibility and
valor to the
seat thrice held by presidents in 1998.

After hoop dancing, Christian hymns and a traditional Din
blessing,
President Begaye declared, ''Today is the beginning of the
New Dawn for the
               Din and Dintah.

''Today is a time to be born, to plant, to heal and build up
our great Navajo
Nation. Today is the time to laugh and dance, to cast away
stones, to
embrace and to get, to keep and to sow, to speak and to love.

''Today is a time of peace,'' Begaye said.

Navajo veterans from all branches of U.S. services marched
bearing flags as
dignitaries joined Begaye on an outdoor platform beneath the
banner ''Unity in
               Motion.''

Assistant Secretary of the Interior for Indian Affairs Kevin
Gover, former
Navajo presidents and U.S. Congressmen J.D. Hayworth of
Arizona and
Tom Udall of New Mexico were among honored guests.

For Navajo resisters, youths and elderly, standing in the
cold with protest
signs outside the entrance, the event was a bitter reminder
of the indifference
elected leaders have shown for the suffering of the Navajo
facing forced
relocation on Hopi Partioned Lands. <<END EXCERPT
