KAMLOOPS, B.C. (CP) -- Native bands are relieved that a southern
interior British Columbia mountain they consider sacred land will be
selectively logged. The Shuswap Nation Tribal Council has cut a deal with
the provincial government to ensure Mount Ida will not be clear-cut.

Area native bands were upset when the government awarded a Salmon Arm
company the right to remove burnt timber from the mountain. But Chief
Arthur Manuel, chair of the Shuswap Nation Tribal Council, said the new
deal will ensure the area is ecologically restored under the guidance of
native elders. Manuel said native bands consider Mount Ida to be a "church
without doors."

Mount Ida, near Salmon Arm, is where a devastating wildfire that scorched
the area last August began. Hundreds of homes were evacuated and thousands
more were on evacuation alert at the peak of the 63-square-kilometre
wildfire.
