Toxic materials coming to Dayton?

Wright-Patterson Air Force Base said it is more than equipped to handle a
possible shipment of toxic material from Alaska.

The proposal is still in the very early stages. The shipment could go to
half a dozen other federal locations, but it looks like Wright-Patt is a
likely candidate.
Wright-Patt already has a decommissioned nuclear reactor that could
house radioactive-powered machinery. The Air Force wants to move ten
generators from Alaska to someplace, possibly Ohio.
The generators are powered by strontium 90, a lessor radioactive, but
potentially cancer-causing element. Base officials believe they can safely
house the machinery.
We are very confident that it would be safe, Ron Lester, Wright-Patts
environmental manager. We have the procedures in place for the safe storage
of the machinery.
Dayton commissioner Mary Wiseman is concerned about the machinery being
so close to the Miami Valleys aquifer. An accident could contaminate the
only water supply for 400,000 people, said Wiseman.
Environmentalist Jane Forest said if the federal government begins to
store machinery at the base, it wont stop there. Forest believes the
machinery sits in Alaska unprotected.
We understand it needs to go to a proper place, but we are worried
about setting a precedent that this would be a dumping ground for waste,
said Forest.
Base officials said that once an environmental assessment begins, it
usually takes a minimum of six months to finish.

Comments:

In the 50's and 60's ORNL made a large number of these Sr-90 powered RTG
for remote applications in alaska and far offshore ocean bouys. These are
extremely danagerous isotopes to life. Sr-90 was abandoned for Pu-238
RTG's later which are considered safer in comparison.
