Hundreds of supporters of the leftist rebels took control of the town hall in San Andres Larrainzar on Thursday, chasing away police who had seized the building the day before. Rebel supporters had maintained control over the town hall since late 1994. The Zapatistas staged a brief uprising in January that year, demanding greater democracy and Indian rights. Interviewed at a ceremony marking the 80th anniversary of the assassination of revolutionary hero Emiliano Zapata, Chiapas Gov. Roberto Albores Guillen said the decision to withdraw police and drop charges he had filed Friday against Zapatista leaders "is a demonstration of the reasonableness of my government." "I am convinced of the good faith of those who have occupied the town hall, and I believe they do not want to disturb the public peace in Chiapas," he said.
