Concerned people working for New Mexico's Native American community-based
organizations and representatives from the Department of Health's
Infectious Disease Bureau are pleased to announce New Mexico's first
state-wide, Native specific health symposium on HIV and AIDS. The theme
for the conference is "Circle of Harmony: HIV/AIDS Wellsness." The
conference will be held at Albuquerque's Winrock Inn Hotel from April 15
through 17, 1999 with registration beginning at 5:00 p.m. on April 15th.
Registration is free to maximize our community's participation. Following
registration there will be a Talking Circle at 7:00 p.m. and workshops will
be held on April 16th and 17th. On Saturday afternoon, participants will
have an opportunity to socialize at a pow wow at Albuquerque's Indian
Center beginning at 1:00 p.m. The Circle of Harmony organizing committee
will host a feed at 5:00 p.m. followed by Grand Entry at 7:00 p.m.

Historically, Native peoples in North America have suffered from many
diseases to which we had no immunity. Tens of thousands of our people died
from influenza and polio because we had no defense. Our committee is
concerned about creating defenses for our communities surrounding HIV and
AIDS. With the intervention of our own leaders and organizations we can
successfully avoid history repeating itself.

Accordingly, the conference will feature speakers and workshops on such
issues as prevention, youth, services, spirituality and tradition. On
Saturday afternoon we will also have an affirmation circle and candle
commitment ceremony. Among the guest speakers will be Robert Cross, Bernie
Eagle Speaker, Maynurd Shurley, Robert Edison, Janice Wilson, Dr. Steve
Jennison and Judy Weiser. A special guest presentation will be given by
Rodney Horne, a Salish widower living with AIDS and currently raising three
young sons (two of them infected). Ron Rowell of the National Native
American AIDS Prevention Center will give a keynote address during the
Friday luncheon. Spiritual leaders, Pat Trujillo and Phil Crazy Bull, will
be present to offer prayers, encouragement and strength during the event.
