[The following statement was written for April 15, 1999, March for
Justice in Brooklyn, N.Y., to protest the police killing of African
immigrant Amadou Diallo.]
WHEN COPS KILL
THOUGHTS ON THE DIALLO SLAUGHTER
By Mumia Abu-Jamal
The 41 shots aimed at Amadou Diallo have struck nerves and sparked
such vigorous resistance in New York because of the long train of cop
shootings in the city, where killer cops have traditionally used the
old "he-was-a-bad-guy" or "his-stick-of-chewing-gum-looked-like-a-gun"
defense, and walked away uncharged. What made all the difference in
the world in the prosecution of these state-paid killers was the
relentless wave of protests and demonstrations in the city, for which
ALL of you are to be heartily applauded and commended.
But at the same time, in Philadelphia, a young Black man is also shot
to death even though unarmed, and the killer cop's manslaughter
charges are dropped--twice! The difference between New York and
Philly? Protests. One city erupted into resistance; the other didn't,
and there the charge got dropped like a bad habit. We need some of
your fire down in chilly Philly! Check with our people down there and
ask about the Donta Dawson case. In fact, I invite y'all to join us in
Philadelphia on April 24 in the continuing battle for freedom and
people's justice! Ona Move!

U.S. Out of Yugoslavia!
By Mumia Abu-Jamal
As a deadly rain of high-tech bombs falls on Yugoslavia, a deadening
rain of propaganda falls on Americans, media-manipulated lies
designed to prime the populace into supporting harsher military
measures against a sovereign nation, in the name of protecting human
rights.
NATO is but a fig leaf for American "interests," and the bombing of
Yugoslavia is but a global demonstration of the ruthlessness of the
American empire. A demonstration? The monstrous atomic bombing of
Japan, after it was virtually beaten in World War II, was not a
military necessity, but a political one, designed to demonstrate to
the Russians that the U.S. was, and would ever be, boss. It was a
massive, deadly demonstration.
So too, the Yugoslavia bombing treats Serbs as the U.S. treated
Japanese during the war--as props to demonstrate the power of the
empire.
Let us consider the claims that the U.S. is concerned about "human
rights" or about the "rights of ethnic minorities," as the corporate
press projects hourly. What of America's largest national
minority--African Americans? The world-respected Amnesty International
group, speaking through its secretary general, Pierre Sane, announced
just days before the bombing, "Human-rights violations in the United
States of America are persistent, widespread and appear to
disproportionately affect people of racial or ethnic minority
backgrounds."
Sane was critical of police violence and executions in the U.S.
Further, internationally, let's see how the U.S. responds to
"liberation movements" of the oppressed. When fighters for Puerto
Rican independence began to raise their voices, the U.S. didn't
support this "ethnic minority," they sought (and continue) to crush,
incarcerate and silence them.
Consider the case of the Palestinians, the Kurds, the East Timorese,
the Colombian rebels--who has the U.S. consistently supported, the
oppressed or the U.S.-armed governments?
This isn't about "human rights." It isn't about "ethnic minorities."
And it also isn't about "genocide." It's about establishing who's
"boss" in the next century. It's about keeping Russia in its place.
It's about keeping the European Union under the thumb of Wall Street.
The bombing of Serbia is an echo of the bombing of three other
countries in the past six months--of Iraq, Sudan and Afghanistan. And
for precisely the same reason--to show that it can be done, no matter
what so-called "international law" states. It is to instill terror
throughout the world, in order for U.S. capital to institute what
former president George Bush tried to do, but failed: to establish a
New World Order.
Days before the bombing, NATO signed up Poland, Hungary and the
former Czechoslovakia (Czech Republic) as its newest members, thereby
virtually isolating Russia. Only Serbia and the Yugoslav states have
refused to join NATO--their bombing is their punishment.
Our brilliant, revered nationalist leader, Malcolm X, taught us to
examine history. If we look at history, the bombing of Yugoslavia
becomes clear.
Empires are maintained, not by reason, but by ruthless terror. It was
so in Rome. It is so in the U.S. The brilliant revolutionary, Dr.
Huey P. Newton, founder of the Black Panther Party, explained, "The
United States was no longer a nation. We called it an empire. An
empire is a nation-state that has transformed itself into a power
controlling all the world's lands and people." (1973)
Huey was right then, and our response then was to oppose the empire.
We must do that now.
Down with imperialism! Stop the bombing! NATO/U.S. out of Yugoslavia!

Rage's Zach de la Rocha to Talk with U.N. Commission about
Abu-Jamal Case
Rage Against the Machine lead singer Zack de la Rocha will travel to
Geneva, Switzerland next week to address the United Nation's
International Commission of Human Rights concerning the case of Mumia
Abu-Jamal. Abu-Jamal, an activist, journalist and former Black
Panther, was convicted in the 1981 slaying of Philadelphia police
officer Daniel Faulkner. Many people feel he did not receive a fair
trial. De la Rocha will also use his April 12 speech to discuss
America's use of the death penalty. The Commission agreed to meet
with de la Rocha at the command of the Humanitarian Law Project, a
non-governmental group that consults the U.N on worldwide compliance
of human rights law. Rage Against the Machine has performed two
benefit shows to raise money for Abu-Jamal's defense fund. The first
was held in Washington D.C. in 1995 and the second was held earlier
this year in East Rutherford, NJ.

SF Spoof Paper Demands Release Of Death-Row Convict
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Hundreds of copies of the San Francisco
Chronicle newspaper showed up Monday wrapped in a spoof paper
demanding freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal, a black activist sentenced to
death for killing a policeman.
The four-page ``San Francisco Chomical'' appeared in newsracks around
San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose, executives at the paper's
distributor, the San Francisco Newspaper Agency, said Tuesday.
``We have hired an outside investigator to check it out,'' said Randy
Schuller, head of security for the agency. ``Nothing like this has
happened before.''
Nobody immediately claimed responsibility for the spoof newspaper that
contained articles criticizing the death penalty, notice of a Saturday
rally, and pictures of Abu-Jamal. Agency officials estimated that
about 1,000 copies of the ``Chomical'' had gone out.
Abu-Jamal, a black political activist and former radio reporter, has
been at the center of an international amnesty campaign since he was
convicted and sentenced to death in Pennsylvania for the 1981 murder
of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner.
His supporters, including actor Ossie Davis, author E.L. Doctorow,
comedian Dick Gregory and musician Pete Seeger, say Abu-Jamal was
railroaded and deserves a new trial. Amnesty International also has
said the state's application of the death penalty in his case was
tainted by racism.
Last year, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court denied a new trial to the
controversial inmate.

HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS NATIONWIDE CALL FOR A NEW
TRIAL FOR CELEBRATED DEATH ROW AUTHOR MUMIA ABU JAMAL
Mumia Abu Jamal Petitions for Writ of Certiorari
U.S. Supreme Court asked to review violations of Mumias
Sixth Amendment Rights
Massive April 24 "Millions for Mumia" mobilization revs up
coast to coast from Philadelphia to San Francisco
On April 24th hundreds of thousands of people from all
walks of life will mobilize in Philadelphia and San
Francisco calling for a new trial for death row journalist
Mumia Abu Jamal.
>From Seattle, Washington to Miami, Florida students &
youth; activists & organizers; academics & educators;
people from religious & civic organizations and
individuals are outraged at the denial of a fair trial and
demand justice in this controversial case.
"On April 24th people from all over this nation and the
world are coming to the simultaneous demonstrations in
Philadelphia and San Francisco because they recognize that
a grave injustice has taken place here and they mean to
stop it." Said Pam Africa head of International Concerned
family and friends of Mumia Abu Jamal. "We chose April
24th because it marks the day, in 1996, that the
Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act was signed
into law. It is also Mumias birthday."
Ironically, April 24 is also the deadline for filing a
"writ of certiorari" asking the Federal Supreme Court to
review violations of Mumias sixth amendment rights.
In October Pennsylvanias Supreme Court denied Mumias bid
for a new trial upholding the original trial judges
ruling. The Journalist and former member of the Black
Panther party was convicted in 1981 of the shooting death
of a Philadelphia police officer in a trial tainted by the
flagrant bias of that judge, the deliberate exclusion of
11 Black jurors and a court appointed lawyer who, by his
own admission, was inexperienced in criminal law. In
addition, witnesses came forward during the 1995 Post
Conviction relief Appeal hearings saying they were coerced
by police to lie, suppress or change their initial account
of the December 9, 1981 incident.
