At least 41 people are known to be dead, hundreds more injured and more
than 2,000 homes destroyed after one of the worst tornado outbreaks in
Oklahoma history churned through Oklahoma City and central Oklahoma. The
same massive storm system also ripped through Wichita, Kansas, where five of
the deaths occurred.

At least one F4 tornado and probably one F5 tornado were included in the
killer. A tornado rated at F4 has winds of 207 to 260 MPH. An F5, if it
occurred, would be the worst known category of tornado, with winds of 261 to
318 MPH.

Death and destruction first spun out of a sultry spring sky shortly after
5:30 p.m. in Chickasa. For the next eight hours, residents struggled for
survival as multiple storms slashed through Oklahoma City and nearby
towns.

Like Shermans march through Georgia, the storms were unrelenting in their
destruction ranging south of Oklahoma City, east beyond Tulsa, and north to
Kansas.
So many tornadoes touched down in so many towns that the exact number of
twisters still isnt known.

At one point, one of the two major tornadoes stayed on the ground for more
than an hour in the Oklahoma City area. At some times, the monster measured
more than a mile wide, with an average size of about one-half mile
wide.

The injured flooded area hospitals. In southern Oklahoma City, the overflow
was first put into any available hospital area, including cafeteria space.
Finally, injured people had to be sent to hospitals farther north.

Some of the injuries streaming into hospitals are already known to be
suffering from the effects of natural gas leakage. Gas has been smelled in
several areas; making an extremely volatile situation with lightning strikes
from onrushing storms still possible.

At least one 25-mile-square area has been totally closed off to all but
rescue workers, who struggle in the dark and in new storms to find the
injured and dead. Miles of homes lay shattered as stunned families are
shepherded to emergency shelters. The National Guard has been activated and
is on duty along with every available police, fire, and rescue
worker.

Blood donations are desperately needed, along with survival supplies,
officials say. The Red Cross is coordinating emergency donations through the
Tulsa office. Shelters that will ultimately host thousands
of people are being opened.
