Prop 5, a state ballot measure which would protect existing tribal gaming on tribal lands, was overwhelming passed by more than 5 million California voters last November. Las Vegas gaming interests funded lawsuits in an effort to block the initiative. A decision from the court is expected about 90 days after oral arguments. The California Supreme Court is located in State Building in the Civic Center at 350 McAllister Street in San Francisco. The building is between Polk Street and Larkin. The oral arguments will begin at 9:00 a.m. and it is anticipated that they will conclude between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m. Designated spokespersons Pechanga Band of Luiseno Indians Tribal Chairman Mark Macarro, Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians Tribal Chairman Anthony Pico and Morongo Band of Mission Indians Tribal Chairperson Mary Ann Martin Andreas and attorney Mark Epstein will be available following the Supreme Court hearing for interviews outside the court. A group of 68 tribal governments has organized the United Tribes Compact Steering Committee (UTCSC), for the purpose of working with Governor Gray Davis to find a process to implement the gaming guidelines contained in Proposition 5 that was overwhelmingly approved by over 63% of the electorate in November. UTCSC represents the largest number of tribal governments in California that currently seek gaming compacts with the state and is one of three tribal government groups presently in discussions with the Davis administration.
