The Indigenous Bar Association is a non-profit professional organization for Aboriginal persons in the legal field. Its membership consist of legally trained persons who are lawyers, judges, law professors, legal consultants and law students. People are becoming more aware and interested in Indigenous issues and Indigenous law is rapidly developing as a result. Thus, there is a great need for lawyers, judges, legally trained people to be informed of Indigenous policies and legal issues. The IBA has played an active role in promoting such developments. Why a separate Indigenous Bar Association? The Law Societies throughout Canada do not fulfil all the needs of Aboriginal lawyers with respect to keeping abreast of current changes in laws affecting Aboriginal Peoples. Thus, the IBA fills a void by providing Aboriginal lawyers with continuing legal education. It also provides a forum for discussing and debating these current legal issues. Furthermore, it promotes networking for Aboriginal lawyers and Aboriginal law students. Find out more about the IBA by reviewing the objectives and by-laws of the corporation.
