Bushie calls Filmon a liar On casino approvals
By TOM BRODBECK, LEGISLATURE REPORTER
Premier Gary Filmon lied to native leaders when he pulled the plug on
aboriginal-run casinos, Rod Bushie, grand chief of the Assembly of Manitoba
Chiefs charged yesterday.
In an angry response to accusations earlier this week by Filmon that Bushie
himself scuttled the casino deal, the grand chief blasted the premier for
using aboriginals as "scapegoats" in his pre-election bid.
"How many times is he going to lie to the public?" said Bushie, accompanied
by about a dozen First Nations chiefs at a news conference.
"He lied to me, he lied to my committee of chiefs on gaming, and he lied to
the public."
The Filmon government in May cancelled proposed plans to set up two pilot
casinos in First Nations communities.
Filmon said he pulled the plug because the AMC refused to meet a number of
provincial demands.
Chief among them was the AMC's refusal to have the casinos regulated by the
province's Gaming Control Commission, Filmon said.
That was made clear in an April 8 letter from Bushie to Filmon, demanding
complete regulatory and licencing control over gaming -- a longstanding
demand of the AMC, Filmon said.
The premier and Native Affairs Minister David Newman made reference to the
letter in the legislature last week, the day the story broke in the news media.
But Bushie said yesterday that letter was written in "sheer frustration"
and was designed to jump-start fruitless talks.
"I find it disgusting that Filmon would use correspondence between our two
offices for cheap political tactics," Bushie charged.
But Filmon said Bushie's statements yesterday were inconsistent.
In his opening remarks, Bushie says he first learned "through the media"
last week that the province had quashed the casino deal.
But he later acknowledged Filmon told him about the province's decision in
a face-to-face meeting in May.
Filmon's office produced a letter addressed to Bushie dated June 18
confirming the May decision.
"I read his statement and it's obviously riddled with inaccuracies," said
Filmon, flatly denying the decision was linked to native protests or his
government's re-election bid.
He said he's not going to engage in name-calling.
"When there's this kind of disappointment in the decision, the grand chief
is probably upset so he may have said things in the heat of the moment but
I'm not going to respond to that kind of thing," said Filmon.
