By Laura Meckler ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON - Suicide, once only whispered about, must be boldly confronted by the nation's parents and children, doctors and schools, and even baseball coaches and hairdressers, Surgeon General David Satcher said yesterday. For the first time, the surgeon general declared suicide a serious public health threat. He issued 15 recommendations for increasing awareness about suicide, stepping up research, and encouraging intervention with people at risk. "People should not be afraid or ashamed to seek help," Satcher said at a news conference. Early next year, he said, he plans to present a national strategy toward suicide prevention that will offer more specific ideas for helping particular groups. Nationally, suicide is the eighth-leading cause of death, claiming about 30,000 lives each year. That compares with fewer than 19,000 homicides. In addition, more than 500,000 Americans attempt suicide each year but survive. Older Americans, particularly men, are most likely to take their own lives. Also at heightened risk are American Indians and gay and lesbian youth. Satcher also plans a full report reviewing the science and treatments for mental illness, a first for the surgeon general's office.>>>>end excerpt Reprinted under the Fair Use http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/107.html doctrine of international copyright law. &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&& Tsonkwadiyonrat (We are ONE Spirit) Unenh onhwa' Awayaton http://www.tdi.net/ishgooda/ UPDATES: CAMP JUSTICE http://shell.webbernet.net/~ishgooda/oglala/ &&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&&
