REPORT CONDEMNS RANCHING ON PUBLIC LANDS

The Southwest Center for Biological Diversity (SWCBD) and New West
Research have published a comprehensive report examining the tax
breaks and
subsidies for public lands ranchers in Arizona and New Mexico. This
report
documents the existence and impact of governmental support for grazing
in the
arid Southwest. The groups say the ranching industry could not survive
without
the array of tax benefits and subsidies that pump hundreds of millions
of dollars
per year into the agricultural industry. The report calls public lands
ranching is the
most common source of land degradation in the region. More than 60
million
acres of federal and state public lands are currently grazed by cattle
in Arizona
and New Mexico. This activity harms wildlife, degrades watersheds,
pollutes
drinking water, destroys riparian habitat and denudes sensitive arid
grasslands.
The report looks at the details of the elaborate support system that
states and the
federal government provide to the ranching industry. The groups hope
the
information will inspire others to take action to revise legislation
that subsidizes
ranchers on public lands. The report is available on the SWCBD website
