The purpose of the conference was to determine where the case sits at this point, to schedule the trial and to address other matters. ****************************** NAACP seeks answers in Wilson shooting http://www.navajohopiobserver.com/news2.htm Representatives of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People have started inquiries into the shooting death of a Navajo man in Coconino County. Alonzo Wilson, 38, died on May, at Flagstaff Medical Center, four days after he was shot at Alpine Ranchos, about 20 miles north of Flagstaff. "There are too many unanswered questions revolving around the Wilson shooting," Reverend Tillman, president of the Arizona NAACP, explained. "The family deserves justice in this situation. They have asked us to look into Alonzo's death, and we will do what we can to see that justice is served." ****************************** Hopi radio faces potentially fatal obstacle http://www.navajohopiobserver.com/news3.htm The Hopi Radio Project is facing yet another obstacle after the Hopi Jr./Sr. High School Governing Board decided August 26 not to take over the project, leaving it without a station building. The board rejected the radio project due to "unforeseen financial constraints and other educational priorities." "It looks like Hopi is not going to have a radio station-at least not at this time-unless the Hopi Foundation can get some immediate help from the Hopi community," said Hopi Foundation Chairman Doran Dalton. "We've done everything in our power to try to make this happen, but it's apparent that the Hopi Foundation may be forced to return almost half a million dollars in grant money because we're unable to find funding commitment for a studio building and its infrastructure. ****************************** Native American renewable energy projects funded http://www.navajohopiobserver.com/news4.htm The Department of Energy has announced it will fund five renewable energy projects worth nearly $230,000 to federal agencies to assist in purchasing renewable energy systems for schools, medical centers and other facilities in Native American communities. Also, the DOE is awarding two grants totaling $50,000 to two tribal college for building energy efficient research. "In keeping with the long history of Native Americans' respect for the natural environment, these renewable energy systems and research grants for energy efficient buildings will provide financial assistance to Native American communities and educational institutions," said Energy Secretary Bill Richardson. ****************************** Panel urges major reforms at the Bureau of Indian Affairs http://www.navajohopiobserver.com/news5.htm Without additional personnel and major management and organizational reforms, the Department of Interior's Bureau of Indian Affairs will be unable to fully meet its responsibilities to the 1.2 million American Indians and Alaska Natives it serves and to operate an effective and efficient agency, according to a report by a panel of the National Academy of Public Administration. The comprehensive review of BIA's management and organization found that BIA does not have the capacity to effectively "perform basic federal functions of accounting, property management, human resources management, procurement, and information resources management."
