Tribal representative renews bid to outlaw 'squaw' in place names

By Associated Press, 11/11/99 02:18

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) Claiming that the word ''squaw'' is derogatory, an
Indian representative will try for a second time to convince the
Legislature to outlaw its use in Maine place names.

Donald Soctomah of Princeton, the Passamaquoddy tribe's non-voting
delegate to the House of Representatives, says ''squaw'' can be loosely
translated as prostitute and the word has become a racial slur and an
insult to Indian women.

''These are our grandmothers, our mothers and our wives,'' Soctomah said
of the women who are belittled by the use of ''squaw'' in the names of more
than a dozen Maine mountains, ponds, islands and other places. ''It's time
for us, instead of knocking our women down, to put them on a pedestal.''

His bill was initially rejected by legislative leaders when they met last
month to decide which bills should be considered during the session that
begins in January.

Soctomah, who filed the bill on behalf of the Maine Indian Tribal-State
Commission, said he will ask top lawmakers next week to reconsider.

In addition to Little Squaw Township and Big Squaw Township, the Maine
places with squaw in their names include Big Squaw Mountain, Squaw Bay,
Squaw Brook, Squaw Cap, Squaw Island, Squaw Point, and Squaw Pond.
