September 19, 2013 AFN National Chief Congratulates Esket'emc First Nation for Winning a 2013 Community Excellence Award Presented by UBCM for Work in Promoting Healing and Reconciliation (Ottawa, ON) - Assembly of First Nations (AFN) National Chief Shawn A-in-chut Atleo congratulates Esket'emc First Nation and their partners for winning the 2013 Community Excellence Award in the Partnership Category given by the Union of British Columbia Municipalities (UBCM). The award was announced today. The Project entitled Remembering, Recovering, and Reconciling - St. Joseph's Mission Residential School Commemorative Project was a first of its kind, promoting the concept that true reconciliation can only take place through understanding and communication. The AFN also acknowledges the UBCM declaring this year, 2013, as its year of Reconciliation with First Nations across British Columbia. "Today's award to the Esket'emc First Nation and their partners and the announcement of the Year of Reconciliation are worth honouring and celebrating as we approach the final days of Reconciliation Week here in BC," said National Chief Atleo. "I had the privilege to participate in the Commemorative Project last May and I thank Chief Fred Robbins for providing to us a great example of the kind of work that can be done to promote healing and reconciliation in Canada. The objectives of this project were to encourage, support and engage in a shared First Nations and non-First Nations dialogue on reconciliation in the Cariboo Chilcotin area and the project fulfilled these goals and advanced awareness and understanding while building relationships. We support these kinds of efforts and we support all those affected by the legacy of this residential schools as they continue their personal healing journey." In the spring of 2013, a number of events were held as part of the St. Joseph's Mission (SJM) Residential School Commemoration Project. The St. Joseph's Mission (Cariboo) Residential School operated from 1891 to 1981 with students primarily from the 15 First Nations in the Cariboo Chilcotin, a region covering over 80,000 square kilometres. Public events, workshops and seminars were held from May 16-19 as part of the Commemoration project. The project provided a strong foundation for the ongoing shared work of healing and reconciliation for a brighter future for all residents of the Cariboo Chilcotin. AFN would like to congratulate local governments also sharing the 2013 Community Excellence Award with Esket'emc First Nation: * Cariboo Regional District * District of 100 Mile House * City of Quesnel * District of Wells * City of Williams Lake "I also look forward in participating in Orange Shirt Day this coming Monday, September 30. This will be another momentous day to inform the public and engage with them to promote healing and reconciliation," said National Chief Atleo. Orange Shirt Day is a reminder of the time a former student who had her own orange shirt taken from her by the residential school, only to see another child wearing it days later. The objective of this day is to aid in the healing and reconciliation process to create a better future for generations to come. Le projet avait pour objectif d'encourager, d'appuyer et d'engager un dialogue sur la réconciliation entre les Premières Nations et des non membres des Premières Nations de la région de Cariboo-Chilcotin. Le projet a atteint ses objectifs car il a accru la sensibilisation et la compréhension, tout en permettant l'établissement de relations. Nous appuyons ce type d'efforts et nous soutenons toutes les personnes touchées par les séquelles des pensionnats indiens dans leur parcours vers la guérison. » Au printemps 2013, de nombreuses activités ont eu lieu dans le cadre du projet commémoratif du pensionnat indien St. Joseph's Mission (SJM). L'Orange Shirt Day (Journée de la chemise orange) vise à rappeler l'histoire d'un ancien élève qui s'est vu enlever sa chemise orange dès son arrivée au pensionnat indien et qui l'a revue portée par un autre élève quelques jours après. L'objectif est de contribuer au processus de guérison et de réconciliation en vue d'offrir un avenir meilleur aux générations futures.
