Basic Book Repair & Paper Preservation

The UBCIC Research Department invites community members to participate in this
second session of the 2013-2014 Research Workshop Series.
This hands-on workshop will demonstrate simple and easy techniques to perform
book repair and paper preservation procedures including the construction of
custom archival enclosures. Specific repairs and techniques will include hinge
tightening, Japanese tissue and wheat starch paste mends, mylar jackets and
encapsulation, custom pamphlet binders, and corrugated clamshell boxes. The
workshop will also give an overview or various agents of deterioration as well
as ways to combat them including environmental monitoring and control, as well
as integrated pest management.
UBCIC Resource Centre Director Alissa Cherry will facilitate this half-day
workshop. Alissa holds an MLIS from UBC, is a certified archivist and has many
years of experience caring for materials held in libraries and archives.
Archaeology & Specific Claims

The UBCIC Research Department invites community members to participate in this
second session of the 2013-2014 Research Workshop Series.
This workshop will introduce participants to archaeology terms, site
classification, basic chronology, RAAD, and the BC Archaeological Report
Library. The workshop will also include discussion on how archaeology is used
to advance specific claims.
This workshop compliments material presented in the UBCIC Online Specific
Claims Research course. It is recommended for, but not limited to, community
specific claims researchers and/or those who have previously taken the UBCIC's
Online Specific Claims Research Course or who are currently enrolled in the
Fall 2013 session of the course.
Kristina Hannis will facilitate this half-day workshop. Kristina has an MA in
Archaeology from Simon Fraser University and is a researcher at UBCIC.
Location: UBCIC Vancouver Office at 5th Floor-342 Water Street, Vancouver, BC
Cost: FREE for First Nations community researchers in British Columbia with a
permission letter from their Chief and Council or Band Administrator (template
letter attached next page).
Due to limited funding, participants must pay for their own travel and
accommodations. Light refreshments will be served.
Register early! Workshop space is limited.
Participation will be limited to 1 person per community unless space allows.
