SEPTEMBER 26, 2013 For immediate Release RESPECT & EQUALITY KEY TO RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT ISSUES Lheidli T'enneh Territory (Prince George, B.C.) - Responding to a short notice closed-door invitation, Lheidli T'enneh met with federal Deputy Ministers today regarding natural resource development, fully aware of the lateness of the government's efforts to engage in a dialogue to build common ground. Lheidli T'enneh continues to assert that it has title and rights with respect to its territory and as such expects to be respected as equals in the process of understanding and assessing the potential impacts and benefits of any given project. Lheidli T'enneh also wants to ensure that appropriate environmental and cultural protection, and appropriate accommodation whether it is financial, equity, employment, training, education or other community benefit are in place before a project can proceed. The Deputy Ministers had communicated in their invitation letter that they want to support an ongoing dialogue to "build common ground and pursue shared opportunities and interests". To date, both federal and provincial governments have too often delegated the duty to consult and accommodate Lheidli T'enneh to resource companies. Unfortunately, industry has often been ill-informed and not respectful of Lheidli T'enneh title and rights. Lheidli T'enneh believes that the federal government has an important role to ensure that appropriate consultation and accommodation does take place. Chief Dominic Frederick, "we have asked the Deputy Ministers to provide a written commitment to pursue this dialogue to create a mutually agreed to process that ensures that Lheidli T'enneh is treated as an equal in natural resource development."
