Special Rapporteur meets with Haudenosaunee

In the evening before James Anaya, the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of
Indigenous Peoples, starts his mission to Canada, he met with a delegation from
the Haudenosaunee in Ottawa to discuss their particular issues and to prepare
Anaya for the nine days of his visit to Canada.

He was first greeted in the protocol of the Haudenosaunee with the symbolic
cleaning of his eyes, ears and throat after his long journey to Canada.

Among the list of concerns that the Haudenosaunee discussed were border
crossing, identity, missing and murdered Indigenous women, the implementation
of the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and related issues.
The delegation also briefly listed numerous other issues that the Special
Rapporteur will face while he travels across Canada such as environment,
tarsands, fracking, new legislation from Canada, land claim policies and other
topics.

Mr. Anaya was very receptive to the issues presented to him and was grateful
for the opportunity to receive the protocol.
