Thanks for your answer. Since now I know I am on the right path, I was 
able to discover why it didn't work "out of the box" ... the "box" is 
running Debian Testing, coming with gnome-vfs 2.14.2, which doesn't seem 
to support GSSAPI/ftp. But upstream (experimental) I have noticed that 
gnome-vfs 2.16.3 is compiled against the MIT Kerberos runtime libraries!
The package providing GSSAPI/ftp support is libgnomevfs2-extra >= 2.16.
