As metacity works so well with gnome, would a metacity patch be a better idea do you think? It could be a lot harder to code than introducing tabs to a particular app only. Tabs suit some types of apps far better than others. Browsers, editors (including ooffice) and the like would be the biggest winners. What do you think?

I don't think it would cause trouble. Instead of special-casing each
application to indroduce MDI, you now have a mechanism working with
consistent behavior on all apps, all toolkits. That'd be great.
