I do not fully understand your suggestion, but if it means what I
suspect it does, then I think this is a bad idea.  Namely, if you are
suggesting ripping out the tcl VFS interface in favor of a hack that
will allow running NS out of a starpack, I think this would be a step
backwards.  The idea of having compile-time option to optimize
fastpath is not unreasonable, but that should be the exception for the
performance critical setup, not the general rule.
