The size of the binary increases by perhaps 300K, seems that should not be
noticeable on a 64 MB device as long as it is not used? The exe of a very
recent snapshot with garmin support is 4452434 bytes.

As of the use of Garmin maps, currently there is no other way to display
height lines in navit. For other features, navit binfiles are better but
also 1.5-2x the size of the garmin map so it is a tradeoff.
For areas where both are available a good combination is a OSM map in
navit format with an overlay of height lines eg from
 http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openmtbmap/contourlines/gmapsupp/

However there are still many cases where valuable maps or overlays are freely
available in garmin format but not as OSM map.
