The link proved very useful.  Thanks!
I now have Navit working in the ~/navit-build/navit directory as per the instructions.

I also now have a ~/navit directory that CMake has made, presumably this is the actual directory that would be the permanent working directory, except there is no executable file there, so the next step ¾ way down the page:

cd ~/*navit*/navit/
./navit

comes up with no such file or directory.

The author of that page also says he's skipped the "usual make install" and just runs it from the build directory. So would I "make install" from the build directory or the new navit directory?
