Which version are you using? The (current?) package from the navit website or the kubuntu packages? In case of the first, there should be a navit.log in $NAVIT_ROOT, maybe that gives you more details. If not, you could set the <debug name=global> to 1 and retry. Maybe that gives you (and us) some detail on what is failing.
