DRUNKENNESS

DRUNKENNESS: A state of dizziness, headaches, and vomiting
resulting from drinking alcoholic beverages.
From Genesis 9:21 on, the Bible describes the shameful state of the
drunken person and the shameful actions resulting from being in this condition.

And Noah began to be an
husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:
{21} And he drank of the wine, and
was drunken;
and he was uncovered within his
tent.
Too much partying led to drunkenness and fear of communication
between husband and wife (1 Sam. 25:36).

And Abigail came to Nabal;
and, behold, he held a feast in
his house, like the feast of a king;
and Nabal's heart was merry
within him, for he was very drunken:
wherefore she told him nothing,
less or more, until the morning light.
{37} But it came to pass in
the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal,
and his wife had told him these
things,
that his heart died within him,
and he became as a stone.
{38} And it came to pass
about ten days after,
that the LORD smote Nabal, that he
died.
It left a person defenseless against enemies (1 Kings 16:9-10;
20:16).

And his servant Zimri, captain of
half his chariots, conspired against him,
as he was in Tirzah, drinking himself
drunk in the house of Arza
steward of his house in
Tirzah.
{10} And Zimri went in and
smote him, and killed him,
in the twenty and seventh year of Asa king
of Judah,
and reigned in his
stead.
They sang loud songs ridiculing other people (Ps. 69:12)

drunkards.
and could not walk straight ( Ps. 107:27).

They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man,
and are at their wit's end.
They vomited (Jer. 25:27) and were in a daze,

Therefore thou shalt say unto them,
Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of
Israel;
Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue, and
fall, and rise no more,
because of the sword which I will send
among you.
They suffered
many unnecessary things (Prov 23:29-35):

sorrow? who hath contentions?
who hath babbling? who hath wounds
without cause? who hath redness of eyes? {30} They that tarry long at the
wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
{31} Look not thou upon the
wine when it is red,
when it giveth his colour in the
cup, when it moveth itself aright.
{32} At the last it
biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
{33} Thine eyes shall
behold strange women,
and thine heart shall utter
perverse things.
{34} Yea, thou shalt be as
he that lieth down in the midst of the sea,
or as he that lieth upon the top
of a mast.
{35} They have stricken me,
shalt thou say, and I was not sick;
they have beaten me, and
I felt it not:
when shall I awake? I will seek it
yet again.
They ruined their future (Prov. 23:20-21).

Be not among winebibbers; among riotous
eaters of flesh:
{21} For the drunkard and the
glutton shall come to poverty:
and drowsiness shall clothe a man
with rags.
Drunken leaders ruin a nation (Isa. 28:1-9).

Woe to the crown of pride, to the
drunkards of Ephraim,
whose glorious beauty is a fading
flower,
which are on the head of the fat
valleys of them that are overcome with wine! ....
{3} The crown of pride, the
drunkards of Ephraim, shall be trodden under feet:.....
{7} But they also have erred
through wine,
and through strong drink are out of the
way;
the priest and the prophet have erred
through strong drink,
they are swallowed up of wine,
they are out of the way through strong
drink;
they err in vision, they stumble
in judgment.
{8} For all tables are full of
vomit and filthiness,
so that there is no place
clean.
Being drunk became a figure of speech for having to drink the
disaster God was sending (Jer. 25:27-29);

Therefore thou shalt say unto them,

Drink ye, and be drunken, and spue,
and fall, and rise no more,
because of the sword which I will
send among you.
Jesus warned that the cares of life may lead to anxiety and
drunkenness (Luke 21:34).

lest at any time your hearts be
overcharged
with surfeiting(overindulgence of
food or drink) ,
and drunkenness(intoxication),
and cares(distravctions) of this life,
and so that day come upon you
unawares.
Paul repeatedly warned against the dangers of drunkenness (Rom.
13:13; 1 Cor. 5:11; Gal. 5:21; 1 Thess. 5:7).

hand:
let us therefore cast off the works of
darkness,
and let us put on the armour of light.
{13} Let us walk honestly, as in
the day;
not in rioting and drunkenness, not in
chambering and wantonness,
not in strife and envying.

Christ,
and make not provision for the flesh,
to fulfil the lusts
thereof.

if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator,

or an extortioner;
with such an one no not to eat.

and for an helmet, the hope of salvation.
{9} For God hath not appointed us to wrath,
but to obtain salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ,
1 Timothy 3:3 and Titus 1:7 warn church leaders they must not
be drunkards.

vigilant, sober, of good
behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
{3} Not given to wine, no
striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;
but patient, not a brawler, not
covetous;

having his children in
subjection
with all gravity(solemnity or
sedateness of character);
{5} (For if a man know not
how to rule his own house,
how shall he take care of the
church of God?)

lest being lifted up with pride
he fall into the condemnation of
the devil.
{7} Moreover he must have a
good report of them which are without;
lest he fall into reproach and the
snare of the devil.

unruly and vain talkers and deceivers,
specially they of the
circumcision:
{11} Whose mouths must be
stopped,
who subvert whole houses,
teaching things which they ought not,
for filthy lucre's
sake{Grk=for shameful monitary gain}.
Drunkenness is a pagan custom, not a Christian one (1 Pet.
4:3).

may suffice us to have wrought the will of
the Gentiles,
when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts,
excess of wine, revellings, banquetings,
and abominable idolatries:
{4} Wherein they think it
strange that ye run not with them
to the same excess of riot,
speaking evil of you:
{5} Who shall give account to him
that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.
Drunkards are among these who will not "inherit the kingdom of God"
(1 Cor. 6:10).

neither fornicators, nor idolaters,
nor adulterers,
nor effeminate, nor abusers of
themselves with mankind,

but ye are washed, but ye are sanctified,
but ye are justified in the name of the
