What does it mean to "Wait on the
Lord"
Psa 27:14
(KJV)
Wait on the LORD: be of good
courage,
and he shall strengthen thine
heart:
wait, I say, on the
LORD.
The English word , "wait" has an interesting meaning
which could well apply to to our relationship with Christ: it means,
{Webster}-"to stay in a place or remain inactive or in
anticipation until something expected takes place."
It is here that the meaning of the Hebrew word takes
over. Because we could ask, "What are we expecting to take place?" The Hebrew
word for "wait" is "quvah" and has the meaning "to bind together, as by twisting
strands together into a rope". One other Hebrew scholar (Gesenius) gives the
definition of this word as "To be robust. To fix one's hope upon Jehovah and to
expect His aid."
So let's put it all together this way: To wait upon the
Lord is " to remain in place in your situation while fixing your hopes on
God, and expecting His aid and deliverance, and becoming stronger in your faith
in the process."
Psa 130:5 (KJV)
I wait for the LORD,
my soul doth wait, and in his Word
do I hope.
A good example of this would be this verse in James:
James 4:13-15
(KJV)
Go to now, ye that say,
To day or to morrow we will go
into such a city,
and continue there a year, and buy
and sell, and get gain:
{14} Whereas ye know
not what shall be on the morrow.
For what is your life?
It is even a vapour, that
appeareth for a little time,
and then vanisheth
away.
{15} For that ye
ought to say,
If the Lord will, we shall live,
and do this, or that.
{16} But now ye rejoice in your
boastings:
all such rejoicing is
evil.
Psalm 37 gives many examples of what it means to "wait
on the Lord". This Psalm contains 4 elements:
1) instructions about waiting on the Lord,
2) promises for blessings which will result when you
wait on the Lord,
3) activities of "evildoers{H=destroyers}" or "workers
of iniquity(H=morally evil)".
4) and promises about what will happen to these workers
of iniquity.
Below you will find more verses about waiting on the
Lord.
God Bless you.

Psa 37:1-11
(KJV)
A Psalm of David.
Fret not thyself because of
evildoers,
neither be thou envious against
the workers of iniquity.
{2} For they shall soon be
cut down like the grass,
and wither as the green herb.
{3} Trust in the LORD, and
do good;
so shalt thou dwell in the
land, and verily thou shalt be fed.
{4} Delight thyself also in
the LORD;
and he shall give thee the desires
of thine heart.
{5} Commit thy way unto the
LORD;
trust also in him; and he shall
bring it to pass.
{6} And he shall
bring forth thy righteousness as the light,
and thy judgment as the
noonday.
{7} Rest in the LORD, and
wait patiently for him:
fret not thyself because of
him who prospereth in his way,
because of the man who bringeth
wicked devices to pass.
{8} Cease from anger,
and forsake wrath:
fret not thyself in any wise to do
evil.
{9} For evildoers shall be
cut off:
but those that wait upon the LORD,
they shall inherit the earth.
{10} For yet a little
while, and the wicked shall not be:
yea, thou shalt diligently
consider his place, and it shall not be.
{11} But the meek shall
inherit the earth;
and shall delight themselves in
the abundance of peace.
Psa 37:37-40
(KJV)
{37} Mark the perfect
man, and behold the upright:
for the end of that man
is peace.
{38} But the transgressors
shall be destroyed together:
the end of the wicked shall be cut
off.
{39} But the salvation of
the righteous is of the LORD:
he is their strength in the
time of trouble.
{40} And the LORD shall
help them, and deliver them:
he shall deliver them from the
wicked,
and save them, because they trust
in him.
Psa 27:13-14 (KJV)
I had fainted, unless I had
believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the
living.
{14} Wait on the LORD: be of
good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart:
wait, I say, on the
LORD.
Prov 20:22
(KJV)
Say not thou, I will recompense
[repay evil for] evil;
but wait on the LORD,
and he shall save
thee.
Isa 40:28-31
(KJV)
Hast thou not known? hast
thou not heard,
that the everlasting God,
the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth,
fainteth not, neither is
weary?
there is no searching of his
understanding.
{29} He giveth power to the
faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength.
{30} Even the youths shall faint
and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall:
{31} But they that wait upon
the LORD shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as
eagles;
they shall run, and not be
weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Rom 8:24-28
(KJV)
For we are saved by hope: but hope
that is seen is not hope:
for what a man seeth, why doth he
yet hope for?
{25} But if we hope for that we
see not, then do we with patience wait for it.
{26} Likewise the Spirit also
helpeth our infirmities:
for we know not what we should
pray for as we ought:
but the Spirit itself maketh
intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
{27} And he that searcheth the
hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,
because he maketh
intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
{28} And we know that all things
work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are the called
according to his purpose.
