The Holy Spirit -Our Helper in Prayer.

Rom 8:26-28 (KJV)
  Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities:
for we know not what we should pray for as we ought:
 but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
 {27} And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit,
 because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.
{28} And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God,
to them who are the called according to his purpose.
1) "Helpeth our infirmities":
Greek: To lend a hand together with, at the same time,
The Holy Spirit takes hold at our side at the very time of our weakness, and before it's too late.
2) "Maketh intercession" for the saints
This is a picturesque word of rescue by one who "happens on one who is in trouble and pleads on his behalf" with another.
3) "Groanings which cannot be uttered"
...pleads "with unuttered groanings"  or with "sighs that baffle words" (Denney). This is work of our Helper, the Spirit himself.
(From "Robertsons Word Pictures" of the Greek NT)
1Sa 16:7 (KJV)
But the LORD said unto Samuel,
 Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature;
because I have refused him:
for the LORD seeth not as man seeth;
for man looketh on the outward appearance,
 but the LORD looketh on the heart.
Rom 8:33-34 (KJV)
Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect?
It is God that justifieth.
(34) Who is he that condemneth?
It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God,
 who also maketh intercession for us.
Joh 14:16-18 (KJV)
And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter,
that he may abide with you for ever; (17) Even the Spirit of truth;
whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him:
but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
(18) I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.
Heb 4:14-16 (KJV)
Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens,
Jesus the Son of God,
let us hold fast our profession.
{15} For we have not an high priest
which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities;
but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
{16} Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace,
that we may obtain mercy,
and find grace to help in time of need.
Psa 44:20-21 (KJV)
If we have forgotten the name of our God,
or stretched out our hands to a strange god;
{21} Shall not God search this out?
for he knoweth the secrets of the heart.
1 Chr 28:9 (KJV)
And thou, Solomon my son, know thou the God of thy father,
and serve him with a perfect heart and with a willing mind:
for the LORD searcheth all hearts,
and understandeth all the imaginations of the thoughts:
if thou seek him, he will be found of thee;
but if thou forsake him, he will cast thee off for ever.
Jer 17:9-10 (KJV)
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
{10} I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins,( fig. the mind ,as the interior self)
even to give every man according to his ways,
 and according to the fruit of his doings.
(Gal 4:6-7 KJV)
And because ye are sons,
God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father.
 {7} Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son;
and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
(Eph 2:18 KJV)
  For through him[Jesus Christ
we both[Jews and Gentiles] have access by one Spirit unto the Father.
Eph 6:18 (KJV)
Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit,
and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;
Jude 1:20 (KJV)
