New England Dinghy Tournament
hosted by the University of New Hampshire
at Salve Regina University
Saturday
Saturday was marked by the first race sailed in breeze between 19-24 mph as
measured by my new cool windmate. The wind chill registered in at 14F
to 19F. I believe it too. 8 races were sailed in breeze that fluctuated between
10-24 mph, with the majority of the day in 17-20. Great racing,
capsizes resulting in several DNS's and DNS's. Some serious close finishes, and
the wow factor for downwind surfing was certainly there. Two protests, one
resulting in
a DSQ the other not upheld.
The top two teams not already qualified will have bragging rights tomorrow at
the end of the day as they will attend the New England Championships.
Sunday
The sort of sunny weather lifted spirits but not temps as the final 8 races
were sailed in very chilly conditions, exacerabted by the breeze making it feel
like winter.
Fetch made for some exciting dowing legs and leeward mark roundings. Breeze
fluctuated between 10mph to 23 mph again today averaging in the 15 mph range.
Great surfing puffs. Only two capsizes made for drier sailors. Reeces races
were held each day, and Bates senior Carolyne Nye who has been trying for four
years finally won one! Courses were WL either 2 or 3 times around. Close
finishes both days for teams. The decision to sail combined divisions in order
to make an
8 team event more challenging worked out well except for the occasional team
racing that took place. That was the only truly disappointing feature of
otherwise
great racing.
It was also noted that several teams while exonerating themselves did not fully
complete their penalty turns however no team that had protested them (some
within earshot of the RC) looked back to insure the penalty was completed. It
would have changed some scores!
Congratulations to Providence College and Maine Maritime Academy for snatching
the final two qualifying spots at the New England Dinghy Championships
next weekend at BC.
Super special thanks to Mike Horn for hearing several protests, Kevin Buruchian
for RC assistance, John Carroll and Kim Adleberger for mark/crash/rescue/repair
work, and
Amy Kuhl for scoring and keeping shoreside folks updated every set if not more
often. Thanks again to Salve for allowing UNH to host at their site.
