The University of Rhode Island would like to put in a bid for the 2011 New England Dinghy Championships, 69th Coast Guard Alumni Bowl. With the 2011 Nationals held in FJs on the Columbia River Gorge, URI feels this a great time for our program to host this event. Our plan would be to hold the event on the Harbor of Refuge (site of 2001 Dinghy Nationals as well as the 2001 and 2004 NE Dinghy Championships). This site would need approval from the state DEM and in the case it is not granted, the event would then be held on the Outer Pond (site of the 2010 Moody Trophy). The event will be sailed in URI’s fleet of 2008 FJs. The fleet of 18, has been meticulously maintained since day 1 and feature many upgrades in control lines and hardware. In addition, we will have a set of brand new north blue ribbon sails, that we are taking delivery of in approximately a week. While we cannot promise the consistent strong winds of the Columbia River Gorge, we feel we offer one of the best chances of sailing in like conditions. We hope all New England Team’s consider URI when voting for site for next year’s CG Alumni Bowl. Respectfully Submitted, The URI Sailing Team URI proposes to host the 2011 COED New England Championship. Boats: 18 2008 Vanguard FJs Sails: 2010 North Blue Ribbon (arriving this fall) Venue: Harbor of Refuge (a breakwater protected bay that features current, wind and waves) Location: Roger Wheeler State Beach (approx an hour and a half from Boston) Housing: Several hotels in the area that are within 10 minutes of the site Note: Because this will be held on the beach we will need the support of NEISA to bring dollies making launching and storage simple and easy. In addition, this is a wet side so sailors will need to go in the water to rotate. At this time, we will not plan on having a coach boat as the entire sailing area is in site of the beach. Any specific questions regarding the site or this event can be sent to URI Sailing Coach Joey Mello at [email protected]
