Middlebury College Sailing Competition Renamed for Alumnus and Champion Sailor
Dr. Stuart Walker

For immediate release: July 31, 2013

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Middlebury College and the Middlebury College Sailing Club
announced today that the Middlebury Cup, an annual intercollegiate sailing
competition conducted at Middlebury each fall, will be renamed the Stuart
Walker Open after Dr. Stuart Walker, a member of the Middlebury Class of 1943,
who has made numerous contributions to the sport.

The author of ten books on sailboat racing, the psychology of competition and
low level wind-flow, Walker was a member of the 1968 Olympic Team and of the
1979 Pan-American Team. He holds countless winning titles worldwide, including
England's Prince of Wales Cup (the first American to do so), and was recently
inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame. At the age of 90, Walker is
still competing and still winning championship regattas around the world.

In 1940 Walker, while a student at Middlebury College, founded its Sailing
Club, first known as the Dinghy Club and, subsequently, the Middlebury Yacht
Club.

The first Stuart Walker Open will be held at Middlebury Sept. 21-22, 2013.
Teams will compete annually for the Stuart H. Walker ’43 Trophy. Each year, the
name of the winning team will be engraved on the trophy, which will be on
display at the college.
