Welcome To Our Latest Mentor...
Yay! The community has a new mentor: Bigsi has joined
the Design Team. Simon joined the community a little over 2 years ago and in
that time has shown himself to be well and truly worthy of the Mentors' badge.
Many congratulations, Simon.
This issue of the Crier comes to you bulging at the seams with content, so
make yourself comfy, put your feet up and enjoy another fantastic read.
Check out What's New for details of the 2004 Community Awards. Nominations
have to be in by the 13th, so get your thinking caps on! Also in What's New are
details of the iPod competition winners and September's Member of the Month.
Our Team Tip highlights a handy little toolbar for Firefox users. Resident
Hosting Team Advisor Pippo gets a grilling in our Staff Profile, and the
Computer Corner puts the new Apple iMac in the spotlight.
You have two weeks before issue #77 is mailed. That should just about give

What's New?
The 2004 SitePoint Community Awards ARE HERE!
You knew they were coming; now it's time to start nominating! Check out the
rules and find out how to nominate in the News & Announcements forum.
Come on! Tell us who you think has been a great member this year.
iPod Winners Announced
In case you didn't notice, SitePoint has recently announced
the winner of the Around The World
Photo Contest, who won an Apple iPod. But because there were so many great
entries, 21 other favourites will each receive a free SitePoint book. All other
entrants will get $15 to spend on SitePoint books -- just for entering the
contest!
Member of the Month
From all of the SitePoint Forums staff, congratulations to Shaun (hillsy), the
Member of the Month for September 2004!
As usual, we took the
opportunity to get to know Shaun a little better. Read Shaun's
interview and post your congratulations here.
SitePoint Forums Go Gold!
Regular visitors will have noticed a few changes around the forums lately.
These were the result of a forum software upgrade from vBulletin 3.0.0 Beta 7,
to the latest stable release -- vBulletin 3.0.3. This is quite a
significant upgrade that has effected changes visually, and in terms of
functionality. You may now have to hunt a little harder to find the link or
feature you want, as the forums layout has been tweaked substantially. Love it or loath it, the changes are here to stay, but like most things, it
shouldn't take you too long to come to grips with the new-look forums. If
you're having problems, drop by our
Community Assistance forum to ask for help. Alternatively, let us know what
you think in the Suggestions and
Feedback section.

Team Tips
Do You Use Firefox?
If you're a Firefox user -- and let's face it, the number of users is
growing -- you'll, no doubt, take advantage of extensions in some form or
another.
However, if you're anything like me, you don't find time to
check the latest 'cool tools' often enough. So, let me introduce those aspiring
or even seasoned Webmasters to something I found last week: Web
Developer 0.8
This handy little toolbar provides a wealth of options that will be handy
to anyone involved in producing Web pages, from outlining block elements, to
adding user-defined style sheets to remotely served pages, and so, so much
more. Check it out!

~ How did you get started on the Internet?
In 1996, I started using the Internet to download datasheets of electronic
components in pdf format. It was hard to receive the printed copy of those
databooks for free. Now, it's impossible!
Back in 2000, I created my own Website about stamps, so my interests moved to
web development.
~ Why do you not have an avatar?
Well, my previous avatar was a daemon remembering FreeBSD. Now that I moved
to Debian GNU/Linux -- even if I'm still a FreeBSD fan -- I thought that avatar
was not appropriate any longer.
~ What are your favorite topics
with Web Design?
Well, I like the server administration side of the Web a lot, so I like
Apache and server side programming. I'm a programmer, isn't it obvious? ;-)
~ How did you come across SitePoint?
Well I heard about it around the Web. I read a lot of articles and I found
the forums very helpful.
~ What made you stay at the SitePoint
Forums?
Don't you know I'm paid to stay? ;-) Seriously, though...
The people. The organization by teams. The community spirit.
You know I came from a forum where the typical answer to my questions was,
"It's been asked dozens of times. Do a search". I was asking about
mod_rewrite...
~ What do you do in real life?
I'm an embedded C/C++ programmer. I usually work with few RAM and slow
microprocessor speeds. My company builds industrial controls. I write the
software that controls those machines.
~ Anything else you'd
like to tell us ?
Thanks for keeping these forums a nice place to be!

Computer Corner
Seriously, Where Did The Computer Go?
You love it,
they
love it, everyone loves it!
With its ease of use and space-saving
design (the unit itself is just over 2 inches thick), Apple’s new iMac G5
has been described as the ultimate consumer product.
These new
generation iMacs are dramatically more compact, but they now boast an
amazing 1.8ghz model. Also, the hugely popular 17” display has remained
intact, and has a bigger brother (20”).
Go buy, NOW!

Dan's "Bit-At-The-End"
Time to hand it back, but thanks!
In all the excitement and speculation surrounding the 2004 SitePoint
Community Awards, it is all too easy to forget about those who have sported the
illustrious badges for the past year, and indeed the year before that.
This year, most if not all of the current awardees will be giving up what
they worked so hard to achieve.
So, just a final note of thanks, and congratulations for one last time to the
"class of
'03"!
