Morton Calls Return Style 'Shifty'
The classic returner for a Joe Gibbs team goes north or south.
Redskins returner Chad Morton, whom Gibbs inherited after
returning to the NFL, often uses his quick moves to dance a bit
before bursting through a hole. Morton has shown flashes of
greatness, and has had only one long return in four games.
Morton is averaging 23 yards on 10 kickoff returns including a
high of 49. As a punt returner, Morton is averaging 6.9 yards
with a long of 14. Although Morton doesn't evoke memories of a
returner like Brian Mitchell, he believes it's off-base to
consider
him an east-west returner.
"I think I have pretty much gone north-south, if you look at the
tape," Morton said. "I haven't had time to really go east and
west. I don't see where I'm making errors. I just have to keep
doing my thing.
"I'm more shifty so I'm going to try to give you something with
my moves."
Morton hasn't been thrilled with his returns, but he believes
this year's unit will end up better than last year's. In the
2003 season, Morton averaged 23 yards on kick returns and 12.5
on punt returns. Morton's highlight was a 94-yard touchdown
return against the New Orleans Saints. Morton had a solid season
although he never got in sync with his blockers.
"We haven't really done anything on special teams," Morton said.
"It takes a collective effort of everybody. We all need to be on
the same page. We're doing okay. Our returning game is okay."

Redskins in recent years and the kick and punt units have been
less than spectacular this season.
