1. COMMENT
-------------------
Marion Kennedy has joined the editors of the Newsletter, replacing Catherine Ferguson,
who we thank for her past efforts. Marion has been working on a new design for the
Newsletter website, which we hope you like. Many thanks go to Colin Lees, CML Web
Design, who created the new banner.

Once a year, I give PINAKES, the Subject launchpad
http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/pinakes/pinakes.html a plug. Its about the only time
PINAKES gets any promotion, yet despite this, its a successful site, generating well
over 100,000 hits per year. Why is that? Well, many people looking for information on
the Internet sometimes get a little frustrated with the thousands of hits that the
popular search engines generate. Sometimes Google, etc., find exactly what you're
looking for, but sometimes they don't, especially if you're looking only for
substantial, quality websites. PINAKES links only to subject gateways, plus a handful
of multi-disciplinary gateways. Over 50 are now listed. Use PINAKES to find a gateway
for your subject, from Aerospace to Zoology, and then explore that gateway to retrieve
quality sites which have been hand-selected by subject specialists.

Many of the gateways also feature other useful services as well, such as EEVL's
OneStep Industry News http://www.eevl.ac.uk/onestepnews/ the Sport & Leisure Index
http://altis.ac.uk/sli/ from Altis and PSIgate's Subject Packs
http://www.psigate.ac.uk/education/.

There is also a PINAKES listing by subject, at:
http://www.hw.ac.uk/libWWW/irn/pinakes/pinakes2.html

Why not help spread the word, by placing a link to PINAKES from your site, or
mentioning it in your Blog?

Internet Resources Newsletter by email and RSS
Over 27,000 people now subscribe to the free email version of this Newsletter. Very
many thanks go to Willco who distribute the email version. To subscribe, at no cost,
go to http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/irn.html

The Internet Resources Newsletter has an RSS feed. This means that you can read its
'headlines' (essentially the Table of Contents) through a feedreader or service such
as Bloglines' My Blogs, and then link through to the sections of interest. The RSS
feed is available at: http://www.hw.ac.uk/libwww/irn/irn.rss This is a .rss file and
therefore it must be processed (or 'parsed') before it can be displayed. The easiest
way to do this is via Bloglines' My Blogs, or via a feedreader, such as those listed
in the RSS Primer.

engage students? What will help students learn more or learn faster? We ask and answer
these questions not with a theoretical world in mind, but fully aware of the realities

3. NICE WEB SITE
-----------------------------
In the course of finding sites of interest for this Newsletter, we sometimes come
across Web sites which we feel deserve slightly more than a passing mention. Each
month we will pick out one or more such sites, and give them a short review. The sites
will normally be UK based, may be small or large, and be of interest or potential
interest to academics. After lengthy discussions we have decided, with incredible
creativity :-), to call these: Nice Web Sites. Details of previous Nice Web Sites are
available in the Nice Web Site Archive.

AERADE
http://aerade.cranfield.ac.uk/
Cranfield University have created a super new version of their free service for anyone
looking for aerospace and defence information. They started with a catchy and
memorable name (AERADE), which is now widely recognised within its target community as
a source of quality subject-based information. With judicious use of graphics combined
with purposeful text which is never verbose, they have crafted a fully-rounded
service.

AERADE not only facilitates the retrieval of internet resources, it also provides
access to information about technical reports, engineering design data, conference
details, jobs and industry news. AERADE knows its audience, and understands that these
particular types of information are what they are often looking for.

It amazes me that Cranfiled have managed to produce AERADE under their own steam,
without large-scale external funding. The new-style AERADE is a great example for
subject-based services to follow.

**** New agcensus subscription service ****
The new EDINA agcensus subscription service was launched on 1 October to provide
online access to data derived from UK Agricultural Censuses.

EDINA agcensus offers distribution maps at 2km, 5km and 10km levels of aggregation
dating from 1969 to the present. Maps and data cover England, Scotland and Wales. Data
can be downloaded as ASCII files suitable for analysis and integration with other data
in a GIS.

Census data for the most recent year is available free of charge and can be visualised
at 10km at: http://agcensus.edina.ac.uk/demo/index.html

Access to the time-series data are free to members of subscribing academic
institutions via the Athens authentication system. The service is also available to
subscribing non-academic institutions (commercial, research, policy) and to
individuals on a per-project basis.

The Agricultural Census is conducted in June each year in England, Scotland and Wales
by the government departments for agriculture and rural affairs. The collated data
provide information on distribution and extent of crop & horticultural production and
rearing of livestock and is also a useful indicator of regional change in agricultural
activity over time.

XML and PHP
by Vikram Vaswani
SAMS, 2002
ISBN: 0735712271

Having dabbled with XML and PHP I felt it was time to take the plunge and go through a
structured approach to learning how the two internet technologies can work with each
other. After some searching and the odd recommendation I decided to go with XML and
PHP by Vikram Vaswani.

The subjects covered in the book vary from the basics of PHP and XML, to XSLT, WDDX,
RPC and ending up with some useful case studies. This, however, is not an exhaustive
list of subjects covered.

There is also a range of good appendixes which cover some of the in-depth issues like
recompiling PHP so that XML support can be added along with a decent glossary of
terms.

This is not a copy and paste type of book as there is no disk with code on it, but
don't let that put you off, the code examples are commented well and allow you to
follow the code logic.

Based on other technical books I have read, I would rate this highly and suggest it to
anyone who is looking to learn the intricacies of PHP and XML.

Richard Young
Portal Project Officer for Altis and EEVL

You can buy the above book from http://www.pearson-books.com/eevl for 20.14

Also available are many other new and recent titles at large discounts.
