Dear Friend,

What terrible news: US companies added 96,000 net jobs to their payrolls in September!

That means only 1.8 million jobs have been added by US businesses in the year since August 2003. The unemployment rate in the United States remains at 5.4%.

Reason to sell dollars, buy euros, and drink yourself into a depressive stupor with a plastic gallon jug of Wild Turkey!

Or maybe not.

Because as weve been faithfully reporting here over the past weeks and months, politicians in Europe have a technical term for 5.4% unemployment rates and close to 4% GDP growth. They call it Nirvana.

***After setting new records borrowing to keep the global economy from turning European, American consumers are apparently tightening their wallets: demand for revolving credit has fallen an annualized 5.4%, or US$3.3 billion.

Overall, consumer credit dropped by a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.4% or US$2.4 billion in August from the previous month - the largest dollar decline since December 1990.

Total consumer credit outstanding is now pegged at US$2.04 trillion.

***French President Jacques Chirac warns of a catastrophe for global diversity if American cultural hegemony goes unchallenged.

Speaking in Hanoi, Chirac said France was right to stand up for cultural and linguistic diversity, as different cultures could be choked by US values.

There is a dainty little irony in the the president of a country that employs a language police to keep out linguistic imports preaching diversity in the capital of a former colony

I myself revel in the idiomatic diversity of English, which is flexible enough to include such French imports as the word cretin.

***Our recent play on Turkish EU membership (and the speculation that this Turkish company could snag Irans second private mobile phone network license) looks like it is appreciating nicely:

TurkCell (TKC:NYSE) today clocked in at US$12.89 with an intraday gain of 4.97%. Thats close to US$ above our recommended entry price.

We think it still has plenty of upside left!

***Quote of the Day:

Oil-for-Food helped Saddam create his own coalition to buy influence in the Security Council, blocking any U.S. attempt to enforce the U.N. resolutions. For all the French talk of Jacques Chiracs principled objections to Operation Iraqi Freedom, Saddam realized that the way to Frances vote was through its pocketbook. Lucrative contracts for French companies, as well as firms from China and Russia, were part of Saddams bid for diplomatic protection.
