October 18, 2004 on this day: In 1898 the United States took possession of Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico was discovered by Christopher Columbus on his second voyage. After discovery Spain took possession and defended it from attacks by both the English and the Dutch. American troops landed during the Spanish-American war in 1898, and on October 18 the U.S. established a military government. By the peace treaty ending that war, Spain ceded the island to the United States. In 1900 Congress established civil government and organized a native regiment to preserve order.
