Do you have a 50 amp or 30 amp service?  50 amp service will in some
systems, will supply 20 amps at 120  vac to the rear AC only, and 30 amp 120
vac to the rest of the electrical system. If this is the case with your
system, it could be that your adapter (the 15 amp 120 vac) is providing
power to only the AC side of the system.
If this is not the case (50 amp) how about when generator is used, vice the
home hookup?
To get the most value from this board, lots of information about what you
have is really needed, and even nicer would be a name so that responses can
be personalized.
