With all the problems we all have with our trailers seems there's an
opportunity for some intelligtnt young sailor to come up with a
better mouse-trap as it were.
You can replace an F-boat trailer for around $3500 which gets you the
same old POS you had before. This contraption will last about 5 yrs
and cost you $500 per year. The brakes will die after the second
dunking, the supports will rot after one year, the rollers will
freeze after 1.5 years, the bearings will die after three years, the
springs will be gone after three years, the wiring will never work -
So what would a bulletproof trailer be like? Perhaps
1) fiberglass I-Beam frame
2) fiberglass supports
3) composite bunks
4) stainless bearings
5) stainless disc brakes
6) composite springs
7) Teflon rub strips rather than rollers
The goal would be to have a trailer that lasts as long as the boat
and doesnt cost more than the boat to maintain or more than the boat
to purchase. Could such a product be built for - say, $6K - would you
buy one? Might a manufacturer offer a high quality trailer as an
option?
