Hollywood and TV often depict amusing scenes of hackers getting busted.
From the original Hackers to Swordfish, and even the Core, you see
illustrations of how the Feds go in with guns prepped and ready to mow
down the dangerous hacker. While this makes for a good story, what
really happens? Well, this week we have an interview with the author of
High-Tech Crimes Revealed, Stephen
Branigan, who is actively involved with solving and busting those
responsible for computer crimes. Find out what this
ex-cop-turned-computer-crime-expert has to say about hackers, the Feds,
and even downloading MP3s.
Next, we have a sample chapter from Cisco
Router Firewall Security that focuses on DoS Protection. This chapter
provides us with a in depth look at how Cisco firewalls can be used to
detect and block popular denial of service attacks that are used to
shutdown networks/services. Even if you don't own Cisco gear, this chapter
can help you understand the damage a DoS can cause and how a firewall
can help prevent these types of attacks.
Finally, we have updated our Security Reference Guide with a section on
Reverse Engineering, one of the key skills for many security
professionals. This excerpt is from Exploiting Software: How to Break Code, which
outlines the legal/social issues associated with reversing. Please feel
free to comment on this, or any of the other articles in the discussion boards.

Weblog of the Week: The Return of WEP Cracking
Seth just gave a wireless security seminar and cracked WEP live...in 40 minutes, with only 200,000 packets. That is a far cry from the original 5million programs like WEPCrack and Airsnort required. Why and how is this possible?
