Backers of Amendment 1; Parental Notification of a Minor's Termination of Pregnancy, say they hope to settle the emotional issue once and for all by limiting the state constitution's privacy protections for minors seeking abortion services. ELECTION 2004: Caribbean Gardens, Naples' only zoo, has found itself in peril and faces the threat of redevelopment, as the Fleischmann family, the owners of the land, look at other options for the property. Efforts are under way to save the local attraction and nearby land totaling 150 acres through a referendum that would raise as much as $40 million through a property tax hike. The measure will appear on the Nov. 2 ballot. There are similarities between the Save the Zoo campaign and the one that saved Cypress Gardens. SCHOOL SUCCESS: Preparing for Florida's standardized testing, Highlands Elementary School students arrived early and some waded through basic skill drills three hours after the last bell rang. Teachers sent home daily homework journals. Parents signed contracts pledging their support. And it worked. The school soared from an overall D to B grade, the first Immokalee school to reach such a ranking. FGCU: Florida Gulf Coast University students welcomed a Utah author with anti-Bush views to campus on Sunday, overturning a decision by President William Merwin to delay the visit until after the Nov. 2 election. Students representing 14 clubs, including both the campus Democratic and Republican clubs, invited Terry Tempest Williams, 49, to talk about her new book, "The Open Space of Democracy."
