Foreign banks may get leeway  
The ministry of finance is of the view that the parent of a foreign bank which 
operates in India through a �partly-owned subsidiary� should be allowed to acquire 
more than 5% in a domestic private sector bank. This means foreign banks that are 
willing to set up Indian entities with minimum 26% Indian shareholding will be allowed 
to hold over 5% in another private sector bank.
