** ARTICLE: The Top 10 Ways to Improve Your Mental Attitude written by
Bruce St. John, Leadership Coach **
-----------------------------------------------------------

Personal energy is an important component of personal and business
productivity. Most people cycle between positive and negative energy
states during the work week. But the percentage of time spent in positive
and negative moods varies significantly. Some people seem to be
overwhelmingly negative, while others in similar circumstances can remain
much more positive. Increasing the time spent in positive states will
improve personal productivity. The following ten tips suggest ways to
facilitate a more positive attitude.

1. Work first on your relationships.

Relationships are both our best sources of happiness and our biggest
sources of problems and frustrations. Developing good relationships and
improving or ending the poor relationships in your life will increase your
personal energy. An effective tactic to start improving your relationships
is to develop better personal boundaries and standards and work on
reducing tolerations.

2. Develop a routine to start every day in a positive mental state.

It is very helpful to start the day with a routine that creates positive
energy. Many people find activities like an early morning walk, exercise,
meditation, quiet time, etc., effective in getting their day off to a
positive start. It is easier to stay positive, if you can start with a
positive attitude.

3. Learn how to monitor your current mental state and changes to it.

This is a complex area, but if you can link negative mood changes to a
source or cause, then you are frequently in a position to quickly change
back. The important point here is once you are in a negative state, get
the message or value from the situation, then take some action to return
to a positive state. This is discussed more in #6 below.

4. Create an energizing physical environment.

Invest some time and money to make your personal surroundings pleasing and
energizing to you. Some small items may make a big difference to how your
personal space affects your moods. Poor lighting can lower your mental
state, especially in the winter. I put 800 watts of halogen lighting in my
workspace and noticed a big mood improvement. Some people report a big
improvement in their mood just by cleaning up their bedroom and making the
bed before leaving for work. Clutter is de-energizing to many people. A
sink full of dirty dishes is de-energizing to some. A small water fountain
can create a feeling of energy. Music can offset feelings of isolation.
Feng Shui is an entire discipline that addresses the harmony of physical
surroundings. Further reading in this topic may give you some good ideas.

5. Carefully monitor your self-talk.

Negative self talk is a common source of low moods. When you are hearing
negative self talk, be alert to the unrealistic, overly negative messages.
Focus on getting any truthful message, then shifting out of overly
self-defeating criticism. It is true that we are usually our own worst
critic.

6. Develop methods of shifting yourself to a more positive state.

Once you are aware of your negative moods, and have developed your own
method of getting the value out of the bad mood, then craft methods of
moving back to a positive mood. These methods can include positive self
talk, taking action towards a desirable goal, interacting with another
person. One creative method is to maintain a Truth Journal in which you
write down your personal Truth about various topics. This Truth can
include past successes, what you are really good at, things you enjoy,
compliments you have received, progress towards goals, etc. Then, when you
are feeling negative about a topic, read the Truth Journal.

7. Deal with problems effectively.

Problems are a part of life. Few people enjoy problems. But, in many cases
we can learn from problems. It may help to ask yourself several questions,
such as:
- What am I contributing to this problem?
- What Life Lesson have I been missing here?
- What is the worst that can happen and how can I improve on that?
- What am I doing right?
- What am I going to do differently?

Getting into a habit of using problems as learning experiences can help us
avoid becoming de-energized when they occur.

8. Focus your energy on attracting more of what you want.

Time and energy spent dwelling on problems is frequently better spent
pursuing desirable goals. It helps to examine your own contribution to any
difficulties and understand how you may need to change. Then be sure to
ask others directly for what you want from them; don't fall into the trap
of under communicating. In this way, you are always making course
corrections and moving forward. I have found it helpful to print out a
list of goals, and my theme for the week first thing Monday morning. This
seems to help me get started on a positive note.

9. Be a positive energy source with others.

Negative energy seems to attract negative results. Keeping your own mood
positive can encourage positive moods and suppress negative behavior in
others.

10. Avoid using negative energy as an energy source.

Many people have a shortage of positive energy in their lives and use
negative energy as their energy source. They create busyness, use
deadlines, crises, and problems to keep them going. In many cases, their
motivation patterns shift entirely from seeking pleasure to avoiding pain.
In most cases, serious burnout is the eventual result of becoming
dependent on negative energy sources.

** ARTICLE: Using Your Senses for Fast Learning written by Chance
Massaro and Steve Wallis **
-----------------------------------------------------------

The learning experts call them modalities. You probably call them senses.
They are the five common senses with which we experience our world. The
ways in which the senses are related to our short and long term memories
constitute our natural learning modalities. This article will clarify how
modalities are the pathways for learning; then it will help you identify
your preferred modalities and finally it will give you concrete ways to
learn faster by using your modalities consciously.

Modality generally refers to our hard wiring: how our nervous system
brings information in, links that information to what we already know and
allows us to bring the knowledge out and use it.

The visual modality refers to what we see and images we remember. Auditory
refers to what we hear: how things sound. Kinesthetic refers to knowing
through touch or by doing. Olfactory indicates smell (our most acute and
least used sense). Gustatory refers to taste.

As infants, we are all pretty much kinesthetic/gustatory; we learn by
putting things in our mouth. This being violently discouraged by adults we
quickly learn to learn through our eyes and ears. We put less faith in our
feelings or the tastes left in our mouths as ways of learning or judging.

You'll know you're visual if you need pictures to understand ideas and
concepts. Visual people think in pictures. They are likely to accompany
their speech with visuals. They may talk fast and use words like
picture, see, glimpse, shape, looks etc.

If you're a visual, you'll do well to look for and create pictures,
charts, maps, diagrams. Color chapters in your texts. Take notes in
different colors. Use collages, painting and drawing to study. To review,
close your eyes and see what you remember.

The auditory folks tune into rhythm, pace, tone and pitch. They remember
how things sound and may translate learning into rap or poetry. They are
often musical and speak in more modulated tones. Auditories do well with
tape recorders, lectures and discussion. Playing specific types of music
in the background while learning can make it go fast and be fun. Making
rhyming or cutesy sounding lists will help the auditory remember well.

The kinesthetic people speak the slowest. They are feeling their way
through life and often cannot learn unless they are doing something. They
say, I get it. when they understand, and That doesn't fit. when they
don't.

Kinesthetics need to move! If you're one, take BIG notes and always
imagine yourself doing something with the material you are learning. If
possible, skip the books and lectures and go directly to the action
required to use what you're learning.

We are all olfactory as smell is the sense that connects with long-term
memory. You smell fresh baked bread and are IN grandma's kitchen. Take
advantage of this by using different spices in various chapters of your
text or carry a fragrant teabag to your next lecture. Peppermint is always
good.

Since learning is, in part, bringing something into ourselves, eating can
support rapid acquisition of information as well as calories. The key
here, as with smell, is to create a solid and discreet association between
a taste and something we want to integrate cognitively, experientially,
emotionally or imaginatively. Use mints while learning a new program,
butterscotch when learning to budget, chocolate when studying new
regulations.

All the above methods work as jumping-off places to creative and rapid
learning. Just by focusing on How DO I learn? you'll get faster and have
more fun. The sweet smell of success will be in the air wafting in the
breeze, which blows the rustling leaves warmly against your skin.

** BOOK REVIEW: Genius Denied: How to Stop Wasting Our Brightest Young
Minds By Jan & Bob Davidson, with Laura Vanderkam **
-----------------------------------------------------------

The Davidsons, a husband-and-wife team, established a nonprofit
organization to assist especially bright kids and their parents in their
quest for educational fulfillment. They draw on their clients' experiences
in this manifesto for change. For gifted students, "doing well does not
mean doing one's best," they believe, and highly intelligent children are
often as inclined to fail as to succeed. Of course, the terrible shape of
educationand public schooling in particularisn't news, and approaches to
learning for specialized groups like the gifted are often as jerry-built
as those for the learning disabled. Like a gentle, scripted but persistent
public service announcement, this book reminds readers that when it comes
to education, legislators, lobbyists, administrators, teachers, parents
and even gifted children themselves sometimes fall into lazy, conformist
patterns of thinking and action, and that both the current situation and
the forecast for the future are fairly discouraging.

The Davidsons make a compelling case for re-approaching giftedness as a
potential disability (to give more attention to gifted kids) and an even
stronger argument for parents, teachers and citizens to consider the
potential loss to American society in the costliest imaginable terms.
Above all, they want readers, whatever their relationship to the gifted,
to start thinking about the issue. This is an exhortatory book that
doesn't resort to finger pointing; it even includes "what you can do about
this" suggestions aimed at everyone from policymakers and principals to
parents.
