November 22, 2004 Passing the Baton —Hugh Hewitt President Bush has selected White House counsel Alberto Gonzales to succeed retiring Attorney General John Ashcroft. General Ashcroft will be missed. He fearlessly led the Department of Justice through the difficult aftermath of 9/11 and has strenuously defended the Patriot Act and the president against a torrent of baseless criticism. Though targeted unfairly by the mainstream media, John Ashcroft wisely used the powers at his disposal to fight terrorists and leave America a safer nation before passing the baton. Mr. Gonzales is an excellent replacement. He has been the president's personal legal advisor and, like John Ashcroft, a front line participant in the war on terror. He has a steady hand and a great mind, and his devotion to the nation's security cannot be questioned. That he becomes the nation's first Hispanic Attorney General is also a plus, signaling as it does the administration's continued commitment to reflecting the make-up of America in the make-up of his cabinet.
