1. Tips To Help You Look Your Best

It's almost New Year's, so get ready for the slew of resolutions to
quit smoking. People start smoking for all sorts of stupid reasons:
peer pressure, pissing off the parents, a lifelong desire to paint
your insides with tar. Giving up smoking, for good, is also a very
personal choice - one you need to make on your own and not because
someone else frowns upon tobacco use. If you are among the club of
smokers (I was one for a long time myself - it's very different
looking back on it all now), here's a take on smoking you might not
have considered. Instead of going over the health reasons for
quitting, let's turn instead to what smoking does to your appearance
(it's much closer to the title of this newsletter anyway).

According to the medical journal The Lancet, researchers analyzed the
size, shape and fat content of the rear ends of a group of heavy
smokers and compared it to the posteriors of non-smokers. Nicotine and
carbon monoxide are among the 4,000 known chemicals you draw into your
lungs and bloodstream when you puff on a cigarette, pipe, or stogey.
These two toxins, in particular, reduce circulation by constricting
vessels that carry nutrient-rich blood and oxygen to the top layers of
the skin. The lack of nutrients seems to impair your body's ability to
produce collagen, the fibrous protein that makes new, healthy skin.

Furthermore, smokers have a higher concentration of an enzyme called
matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1). This enzyme literally demolishes
collagen. The skin of smokers, Lancet asserts, has "significantly more
MMP-1" than the skin of non-smokers. Which means guys (and gals) who
puff typically have sagging, dry, wrinkly skin. Plus the reduced
quality of oxygen in the body that actually reaches the skin causes a
yellowish tint or an ashen color.

If you notice the signs of smoker face/skin, there are things you can
do! The first is to quit smoking now. There is more to it that we
will cover next week. Until then, work on step one!

Until next time,

Susan Derby
