QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS FROM NOTARY
SIGNING AGENTS

Hi Victoria: THANKS TO YOUR SITE I was able to look up a notary in my area and
I found only ONE. The first time I emailed her several months ago I didn't
hear back from her -- but THIS time she sent replied back with her phone
number. I called her today, and she was so WONDERFUL!

She is a VERY SMART lady and she agreed to take me on a few signings with her
to get my feet wet. I did as you suggested and offered to take her to lunch
too, and she seemed happy to accept!

THANK YOU again for all your suggestions and all the help you inspire in people
to help other people make it in the business. My new mentor is GREAT! We
spoke for a LONG time about everything under the sun. I am SO GLAD I got to
meet her -- and it was made possible through your website and the beneficial
services you so generously provide to us all. I am still nervous but feel much
more confident that I may eventually become a successful Notary Signing Agent
in 2005.

Response from Victoria

Congratulations! Thats the way to do it. For those of you still seeking to
find a mentor notary in your area, but have not had any luck try some of these
notary directories:

http://www.thenotariessociety.org.uk/find_a_notary.asp
http://www.1-stopnotary.com/
http://www.123notary.com/
http://www.caldocsnotary.com/
http://www.caldocsnotary.com/

or go to a search engine like http://www.google.com and type in the search
words Find a Notary to locate more.

Contact notaries in your area by writing a nice email of introduction like this:

Dear (Name Here)

I was happy to find your listing in a notary directory I was viewing on the
internet today. I am also a notary and I live very close to you. I would like
to schedule a face-to-face meeting so we can discuss the possibility of
networking together and referring business back and forth.

If you are interested in meeting with me, please call 614-111-1234 or reply to
this email and let me know the best time to contact you.

Thank you for your time. I look forward in meeting you soon.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Victoria -- About 6 months ago I purchased your book on How to Start,
Operate, and Market a Freelance Notary Signing Agent with the intent of
increasing my business. I have increased my business almost 3-fold. I am so
busy right now that I am actually turning business down. I have a good friend
of mine that wants to get into this business but has hesitated in fear of
taking business away from me. Even though I have told her every step of the
way what she would need to do next.

My thought is that I could have her come and work for me. This would take some
added pressure from me and give her the experience that she is lacking. My
question is this: How do I go from being a signing agent to being a signing
company?? Obviously, when companies are calling me to do signings for them,
they expect ME to show up and do the work. Also, some companies only pay
$45-50 per signing. How is it that I would still pay her and keep a 'small
profit' for myself??

My intention is that I would have her sign a contract for 1 year and that would
allow me to purchase your bankruptcy book and start that business. I also have
someone else that is interested in coming to work for me under the bankruptcy
business too!! Any suggestions or comments would be welcomed!! Thank you for
all that you do!

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Response from Victoria

Thank you for the excellent testimonial. The notary book at
http://www.50statenotary.com/book/ has helped 100s of notaries do the same
thing and I hope it continues helping new notaries in the future because the
majority of the information is timeless.

Now to answer your questions. First of all I would slow down and not enter into
any contract until you tried out the inexperienced notary a few times to find
out if she is dependable and has the skills you need for representing your
company in the proper manner. Even though this person is a friend of yours
friendship and business often do not mix very well. You need to work through
the process a few times to see if it works for both of you before thinking
about entering into a contract of any nature.

As far as presenting your friend to the borrower in the proper manner since you
accepted the assignment, I never found myself in a situation where the borrower
cared who the notary was. I accepted the assignment, called the other notary
and confirmed they could do the signing. Then I called the borrower and said
something like: Hello, I am Victoria Ring of 50 State Notary. Jane Doe will be
the mobile notary conducting the signing this afternoon and I am calling to
confirm that appointment. The borrowers never questioned me as to why Jane
Doe was doing the signing instead of me. They automatically assumed Jane Doe
worked for 50 State Notary which she did and no further explanation was
necessary.

As far as paying contract notaries who worked for 50 State Notary, I always
believe it is good business to pay the notary who did signings for me upfront.
I then waited on my money to come from the signing or mortgage company for
reimbursement to the company. In other words, I never made my contract
notaries wait for payment. If so, I would have never been able to keep
contract notaries who were dependable, did a good job and enjoyed working for
50 State Notary.

As far as being able to pay a contract notary and make a profit on a $45 - $50
signing, the answer is: You CANT! First of all, if you are thinking about
starting a signing company you would NEVER have signing companies as your
customer base. Your customer base would be mortgage and title companies who pay
$250 to $400 per signing. This is the only way a signing company can make money
and have other notaries working for them.

Therefore, in order to implement your idea, you would need to build up a
customer base of companies paying good money for signings BEFORE you would have
the ability to hire contractors. You cant accept a $45 signing and expect
anyone with a brain to work for $20. My question then becomes why are you
working for these low-paying companies in the first place?

However, since you already have this type of customer base in place for your
business, the only thing you can do at this point (and truly help your friend)
is by simply giving her the notary assignments and let her keep the entire $45
or $50. This may not immediately put money in your pocket, but your friend
will gain some excellent experience that you can use for your companys benefit
in the near future.

I strongly urge you to go back and read the notary book again. There are
several marketing tips you did not pick-up. The information about starting a
signing company and how they operate begins on Page 119.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Victoria: What does the SS mean on the notary certificate?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Response from Victoria Ring

I found the answer for you on a notary education internet web site at
http://notaries.dos.state.fl.us/education/faq/

Some notaries mistakenly believe that they are to fill in the signer's social
security number after the letters "SS" Actually, the letters are the
abbreviation of the Latin word scilicet, meaning "in particular" or "namely."
They appear in the venue, so that the location of the notarization literally
reads, "In the State of Florida, in particular the County of ____." You may
simply ignore these letters and complete the venue as usual.

For those of you who have other types of notary questions you can go to Google
at http://www.google.com and type in a question. To find the answer published
above, I typed in the search words: what does ss mean in notary certificate
and I had the answer immediately. Save yourself time and use the search
engines to your advantage.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Victoria: What is the difference between the notary book and the notary
book plus? Is it the same info we bought separately at one time?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Response from Victoria Ring

I dont have any book titled Notary Book Plus. Perhaps you are referring to
The Best of The Notary News Volume 1. This book is NOT the same information
published in How to Start, Operate and Market a Freelance Notary Signing Agent
Business. Instead, The Best of The Notary News Volume 1 contains all the
articles, questions and answers and much more that were published in Issue 1
through 52 of The Notary News (the ezine you are reading now.)
