VOIP Update

1. News: Startup's Offer Lowers the VOIP Price Floor

A voice over IP startup whose founders hail from MCI has
come up with a new consumer-scale calling package that
brings the monthly unlimited charge as low as $16.58.

2. News: Exploding Cell Phones a Growing Problem

Curtis Sathre said it was like a bomb going off. His
13-year-old son Michael stood stunned, ears ringing, hand
gushing blood after his cell phone exploded. Safety
officials have received 83 reports of cell phones exploding
or catching fire in the past two years, usually because of
bad batteries or chargers.

3. News: Lobbyists Try to Kill Philly Wireless Plan

Philadelphia's plan to offer inexpensive wireless Internet
as a municipal service--the most ambitious yet by a major
U.S. city--has collided with commercial interests including
the local phone company, Verizon Communications.

4. News: Get Ready for the MIM Revolution

Mobile Instant Messaging software replaces SMS and lets
users know the status of all contacts stored in their cell
phone's memory, as personal computers do with buddy lists.

5. News: Net2Phone Rolls Out Wi-Fi VOIP Handset

Net2Phone has announced the release of a Wi-Fi handset for
its VoiceLine IP telephony service. Mum on its OEM origins,
the service provider will sell the XJ100 handset for $160,
chiefly through its reseller channel of cable operators,
ISPs, interconnects and telcos.

6. Opinion: Blame it on Overpaid Operators

I've been reading about and following the emergence of Voice
over IP services since their inception and have also seen
various voice-over-the-Internet initiatives come and go. The
investment in those expensive old phone switches and the
desire of phone companies to keep them running are the
biggest of many roadblocks to the full implementation of
VoIP.
